Discharge planning for children with SCI who require ventilator assistance is complex and requires a team approach that integrates the needs of the child and family and offers a transition to a home care routine and community re-entry. Elements needed for successful discharge are patient readiness, family readiness, availability of funding for home care, necessary equipment and environmental changes, and community readiness to integrate the child into the school and community. If these elements are not all in place, quality of life may suffer.
