Unlike many other pediatric patients who undergo surgical procedures, patients with a spinal cord injury (SCI) often have compounding medical problems that can significantly affect the course of a surgical procedure and the postoperative recovery. These patients undergo surgical procedures related to their SCI as well as other procedures not related to SCI. Analysis of the medical issues of pediatric patients with SCI in conjunction with basic principles of anesthetic and perioperative care yields a plan for how to approach a pediatric patient with SCI who requires a surgical procedure or for whom a surgical procedure is contemplated.
