Life care planning services have evolved into a formidable service delivery system for rehabilitation nurses and counselors who seek to diversify in their practices. The early developmental stages of life care planning took place in the early 1980s, at which time there was no regulatory body to ensure that accountability among service providers was being maintained and the consumers of such services were protected. Additionally, there were no standards for practice to include qualification criteria for professionals seeking certification in this specialty area or ethical reviews among service providers. The Commission on Disability Examiner Certification (CDEC) planned for the development and administration of a certification credential in life care planning service delivery in 1994. It was not until the spring of 1996 that the first examination for the Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP) was administered to two groups of qualified professionals in Atlanta, Georgia, and San Francisco, California. Since 1996, the CLCP credential has evolved into a highly researched, prestigious credential that has passed the scrutiny of the legal system and some certified life care planner peer groups.
