Cervical orthotics are used to provide initial immobilization of cervical injuries prior to formal evaluation and radiographs. Some injuries, depending on the degree of instability, may be treated with an orthotic device. Common orthotic devices and their indications are reviewed. Many patients treated surgically use postoperative orthotics; controversy exists about whether more extensive stabilization surgery should be done to eliminate the need for post-op bracing and to facilitate acute rehabilitation.
