Figure 4
Unannotated satellite image scene of a portion of the west coast of subpolar Hudson Bay (58°08′26″ N, 92°54′46″ W) in Wapusk National Park about 45 km south of Churchill in NE Manitoba, Canada. This figure, acquired from Google Earth Pro, is provided as a basis of comparison with (b) that contains annotations associated with a BCCS cross-shore transect for this coastal belt characterized by wetland and beach ridge archetypes. (b) Annotated satellite image scene of (a). This cross-shore strandplain-wetland catena is characteristic of many coastal belts with repeating sequences of sub archetypes. The large red arrow containing the cross-shore concatenation contains letting that approximately overlies the archetype depicted in the image and which can be extrapolated laterally by visual interpretation of the textures, tones, and patterns seen in the transect. In this way, the following archetypes and sub archetypes are identified as: Barrier Island, Mud Flat, Beach, Dune, Wetland Marsh, and Beach Ridge Strandplain. The wetland marsh and beach ridge strandplain features then repeat this ecotonal succession inland. The Coastal Ecological Sequence (CES) for this cross-shore transect is 7BabiFmuBesiDuWmrBrspWmrBrspWmr. Polygons, lettering, and arrows are used to show how the cross-shore units can be expanded to map a coastal belt.
