This annotated profile showing the layout of a sand/mud flat polymorph on the Bay of Bengal coast near Hukitala, State of Odisha, India, shows the conceptual progression from a topographic trace based on elevational data acquired from a satellite image (upper right-hand corner) to an archimorphic sequence (lower left-hand corner) to the flat ideogram (top center). The flat lies between two barrier islands that provide slightly higher elevation anchor points, but the ideogram is stylized into a curvilinear sketch line that shows hypothetical positions of generalized flat archetypes relative to tidal cycles where part is submarine and part is subaerial. The BCCS code (Babi)Wma,mrFsa,muWma,mr(Babi) identifies a sandy-muddy flat archimorph lying between mangrove and marsh wetland archimorphs with the barrier island subarchetypes denoted in parentheses as they are not required for construction of the flat ideogram.
