In Anthony et al. 2013, we mistakenly claimed (p. 307–308) that there were “no other reports” about post-fledging biology in Grasshopper Sparrows, and our paper was the “first quantitative report on fledgling activity in a migratory emberizine …”. Prior to the publication of our paper, two publications, Hovick (2010) and Hovick et al. (2011), reported detailed comparisons of the survival of fledgling Grasshopper Sparrows tracked by telemetry in Iowa grasslands managed by fire and grazing. They reported rates of mortality (74%) of fledgling Grasshopper Sparrow mortality that match our report of 25% survival without telemetry in MD, the probable predators (and other causes) of the mortality, and the distances from the nest at which corpses and live juveniles were last detected. We acknowledge the precedence in publication of post-fledging Grasshopper Sparrow biology by Hovick (2010) and Hovick et al. (2011) and the citations within.
