Mary Bomberger Brown will be remembered for her contributions to humankind as an ornithologist, editor, avid birder, teacher, mentor, and friend. She passed away from complications after a long battle with cancer. Mary received all of her degrees in her home state of Nebraska: a BS with distinction in Biological Sciences in 1979 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, an MS in Biological Sciences in 1982, and a PhD in Applied Ecology in 2011. She authored 4 books, including Coloniality in the Cliff Swallow: The Effect of Group Size on Social Behavior, a citation classic that resulted from her work with Charles Brown during a period of over 30 years in western Nebraska. Their mark–recapture dataset is considered to be the largest in the world, and their investigations of these unique birds living in colonies on cliffs and under bridges provide the foundation for what is known about tradeoffs of...
