His early work documenting the major molting site of Great-crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus)in the Ijsselmeer of Friesland (Limosa 47:16–22, 1974) was soon followed by a monograph on that species' biology and behavior (Wetenschappelijke Mededelingen K.N.N.V. 160:1–87, 1983).
