His early work documenting the major molting site of Great-crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus)in the Ijsselmeer of Friesland (Limosa 47:16–22, 1974) was soon followed by a monograph on that species' biology and behavior (Wetenschappelijke Mededelingen K.N.N.V. 160:1–87, 1983). Subsequently, he turned to the Rednecked Grebe (RNG, Podiceps grisegena), a medium-large, mostly bottom-feeding invertebrate specialist that breeds in shallow, highly vegetated lakes in boreal and north temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.
