When the first edition of the SASOL Birds of Southern Africa came out in 1993, it was already considered a very good field guide, far better than what existed on the market at that time for the region. I was living in South Africa when the second edition was published and enjoyed using that significantly improved version of the field guide. Revision after revision, the main authors, Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, and Warwick Tarboton, and in the fourth edition Peter Ryan, in association with the editor Pippa Parker from Struik Nature (Penguin Random House South Africa), have been continually improving the book. When I heard about a fifth revised edition, I was curious to how it could be improved.
