I have had the privilege of reviewing this book as well as the previous guide by Lee that covered the Empidonax and pewees (Wilson Journal of Ornithology 136:121). As with the previous guide, the author is facilitating the ability to quickly identify flycatchers by what it often referred to as “jizz.” This is accomplished by placing emphasis on morphology and color of the head, bill, and plumage details such as contrast of wing bars, eye rings, and other characters.

The treatment includes Myiarchus flycatchers, the largest group, and the kingbirds. Kingbirds are further divided into yellow-bellied and white-bellied species with hybrids. There are matrices to help separate species within these groups. Each species is well illustrated with color plates and maps showing range and the chronology of migration. The treatment of hybrids is worth noting because many field guides lack this feature and this one covers it very well...
